Bulgaria has vetoed the start of accession talks with North Macedonia. This
means Albania’s process is on hold too, as the two countries have been
coupled together in the process. The appointment of new governments in both
Sofia and Skopje gives some hope of a breakthrough this year, but finding a
solution will not be quick or easy. Progress in another long-standing conflict,
between Serbia and Kosovo, cannot be expected at least until after the April
general and presidential elections in Serbia.
