TMO will buy red/white milling wheat at TRY2,250/tonne ($267/tonne as of July 30), up 36% year on year, and barley at TRY1,750/tonne ($208), up 37% y/y.
On May 26, the TMO released its grain selling prices for 2021. It will sell milling wheat at TRY2,450/tonne ($291) and barley at TRY1,950/tonne ($232).
On the domestic market, the average market price for a tonne of Anatolian hard red wheat rose by 41% y/y to TRY2,431 ($286) on July 29, while the barley price was up 70% y/y to TRY2,303 ($271).
Also on July 29, the US’ average hard red winter wheat export price stood at $313, up 40% y/y, while the Russian Black Sea barley price was up 14% y/y to $215.
In 2020, Turkey’ wheat imports rose to 8.58mn tonnes from 8.37mn tonnes in 2019, while the average price rose to $234/tonne from $222/tonne.
In its latest World Agricultural Production report released on July 12, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) kept its estimate for Turkey’s barley production in the 2021/22 marketing year constant at 6.2mn tonnes, thus down 23% y/y. It was the same figure as in the June forecast and lower by 11% compared to the May forecast.
The USDA also kept its 2021/22 wheat production estimate for Turkey at 17mn tonnes, down from 17.25mn tonnes in May and 18.25mn tonnes in 2020/21.
In Romania, on the contrary, the agriculture minister expects the wheat crop to be record-breaking by exceeding 11mn tonnes.
Ukraine has also reported expanded wheat and barley harvests, but Kazakhstan is dealing with a drought.
On July 12, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev sacked Agriculture Minister Saparkhan Omarov after the USDA cut its wheat production forecasts for Kazakhstan, Russia and the US.
