Nearly 1.2mn international passengers used Turkey’s two-year-old mega airport, Istanbul Airport, in Q1, down 56% y/y, while the domestic passenger traffic total at the airport fell by 30% y/y to 3mn.
The airports in Izmir on the Aegean coast and Antalya on the Mediterranean coast, two of the most popular destinations for international holidaymakers headed to Turkey, saw 77% y/y and 56% y/y declines in foreign passengers, respectively.
Turkish Airlines (THYAO) flew 2.5mn passengers in March, compared to 2.8mn in March 2020. In Q1, Turkish Airlines served 6.4mn passengers, as against 13.5mn in the first quarter of 2020. At end-March, the company had 362 aircraft.
The airline reached a restructuring deal with Boeing on deliveries of 75 previously ordered B737 MAX aircraft.
Turkey’s sovereign wealth fund, the Turkey Wealth Fund (TWF/TVF), holds 49% of Turkish Airlines.
On April 13, the airline announced the appointment of some board members in a stock exchange filing.
Last year, discussions in media suggested Turkish Airlines has around 350 aircraft and approximately 700 directors, including one who is responsible for the provision of bottles of water and one who is responsible for the carrier’s toilets.
Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines’ number of passengers fell 4% y/y to 1.29mn in March and 45% y/y to 3.4mn in Q1.

Floating power plant company Karpowership, owned by Turkish conglomerate Karadeniz Energy Group, is on track to sign a new 20-year contract with South Africa to supply electricity via three floating liquified natural gas (LNG) units with a combined capacity of 1,220MW.
Germany’s Nordex will provide 187MW turbines order for Caba Grup’s wind project in Turkey. Nordex remained the market leader in Turkey in 2020 with a market share of approximately 27%.
