A controversial free trade agreement (FTA) upgrade negotiated by the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and Turkey in 2018 is set to come into effect from October 1 after surviving opposition from Switzerland, an EFTA member together with Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
The decision to postpone ratifying the deal came after an intense row in the Swiss parliament about Turkey’s human rights record following the failed military coup that took place in the country in July 2016.
The original FTA has existed since 1992. The new version brings in regulations to facilitate mutual recognition of intellectual property protection, service sector exchanges and trade and sustainable development.

Trading volume between Switzerland and Turkey stands at CHF3.1bn ($3.4bn). Turkey ranks 22nd among nations Switzerland trades and as a sales market for Swiss companies.
