Renewable energy plants in Turkey set to become operational within the January 2021 to June 2021 period will be able to benefit from feed-in tariffs (YEKDEM), according to a presidential decree published on September 18.
Under a scheme introduced in 2011, Turkish renewable energy plants such as wind, hydropower, geothermal, biomass and solar installations are provided with feed-in tariffs. The support for wind and hydropower plants is fixed at $0.073 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), for geothermal facilities at $0.105 kWh and for solar and biomass plants at $0.133 kWh.
It was expected that YEKDEM, which applies to all plants built until the end of 2020, would be replaced by another scheme, likely to comprise of purchase guarantees at a lower price, an unnamed industry source told Reuters in February.
There was also talk suggesting that prices would turn to Turkish lira.
However, the latest decree does not include information on prices; that probably means that prices will stay unchanged for the time being provided a new decree is not issued until the current term expires at the end of this year.
Plants will benefit from YEKDEM until end-2030.
The number of plants that benefit from YEKDEM rose to 817 with a total installed capacity of 21,858MW in 2020 from 777 a year ago.
As of 2020, 461 hydro-plants with a total installed capacity of 12,444MW along with 165 wind plants with 6,974MW, 49 geothermal plants with 1,502MW, 25 biomass plants with 762MW and 17 solar plants with 174MW were registered under YEKDEM.
In August, Turkey paid a total of Turkish lira (TRY) 3.95bn for 5.7mn MWh of electricity produced under YEKDEM.
