less, and do not remain suspended in the air, special air handling and ventilation are
not required.
Latex Sensitivity
Latex sensitivity is an emerging and important problem in the health care field. Following
the development of Universal Precaution Standards (OSHA, 1980), the use of natural
rubber latex gloves for infection control skyrocketed. Within the last decade, however, the
incidence of latex sensitivity has grown. Every health care worker must be concerned about
latex sensitivity. Individuals with a known sensitivity to latex should wear a medical alert
bracelet.
PHLEBOTOMY SUPPLIES
The basic step in performing venipuncture is to have the necessary supplies and/or equipment
organized for proper collection of specimens. The evacuated tube system is the most popular
system used because of its ease when drawing more than one sample.

THE EVACUATED TUBE SYSTEM
A. Evacuated tubes:
Color-coded for specific tests and available in adult and pediatric sizes.
B. Double-headed needles:
Known as a straight needle. These are disposable and are used only once both for single-
tube draw and multi-draw (more than one tube).
Needle size:
Blood banking: 16gauge - 18gauge
Routine Venipuncture: 21gauge - 25gauge
