“Sting was a part of my life for 25 years before I met him. I grew up listening to the Police, and Reggatta de Blanc was the third album I ever remember hearing. My dad used to play it in the car with my whole family on the way out to dinner. How do you check that experience at the door? The emotional scales are tipped in these scenarios—heavily. But I’m a big chess fan, and I finally got him talking when I asked him what it was like to play Garry Kasparov. He smiled and told me a great story. Leveling the wild discrepancy between our experience with one another is the hardest part of making portraits of famous people.”
