“Lupita is one of the most naturally beautiful people
I’ve photographed. She was lovely, calm, and intelligent. We photographed at the Public Theater near Astor Place in NYC and ended up shooting
in the lobby. It’s a hurdle to
be in a public space with such a famous person. I always
try to make sets as intimate as possible so I can remove distractions and increase fo- cus. I’m constantly up against challenges to the intimacy I’m hoping to get in my images.
To combat this, I bring scrims, screens, extra lights—anything, really—to help block the set and make it feel more inti- mate. It worked in this case. We were able to keep the public—and the more nosey parts of her entourage—out, so I had a few solid moments to get this frame.”
