“Tom, and the opportunity to photograph him, embodies many of the reasons why I wanted to become a portrait pho- tographer. He’s a movie star but also a relevant and signifi- cant influence on many American lives. He is ‘America’s Dad,’ and that means something for a lot of people. He’s the most down-to-earth guy you can be if you’re world famous.
I felt the weight of this shoot before we did it. I was nervous. I wanted to do well and make a great image. He walked in, and we spent the first minute and a half chatting under the lights. Nine-and-a-half minutes and four setups later, he was out of my hands. I sent him a print afterwards and got a note back. It says, ‘You got me. —Hanx’.”
