“The coolest thing about this shoot was that I got to be around that voice for two hours. I was indoctrinated on Dave. The Late Show played in my home every night when I grew up. Even if I was a kid running around, not paying attention, that humor and cadence sunk into my subcon- scious. Candidly, I was disappointed when no one called me to photograph Dave when he was retiring in 2015.
I thought it would be my last chance. But one day, two
years later out of the blue, I did get the call. Dave was an amazing mix of Midwestern politeness and sharp, deprecat- ing humor. We were talking about Annie Leibovitz when I snapped this frame. I got him to look directly into the camera only a handful of times. We talked skiing, being a dad, and Dave Grohl.”
