“This shoot is a testament to the team you have. It could have been bland, it could have looked tired and uninspired. We photographed Gary in a room with a seven-and-a-half-foot ceiling. He’s six-foot-five-feet tall. That’s a real challenge if you want the light to feel like a shaded sun. I sat him down, but that only bought me another foot as he was still too tall.
So we broke out the problem-solving kit and rigged up a mess of an organic flag system that made the light feel right. There was a lot of potential for mistakes. Instead, I’m really happy with it, and that’s because of my team. Gary and I talked about John Varvatos, pickup basketball, having new babies crawling around, and our lack of sleep.”
