Isocyanates
▪ Irritate the mucous membranes of the eyes, gastrointestinal and
respiratory tracts.
▪ Direct skin contact can cause contact dermatitis and
inflammation.
▪ Can sensitize workers, making them subject to severe asthma
attacks if exposed again.
▪ There is evidence that both respiratory and dermal (skin)
exposures can lead to sensitization; usually over a period of
months or years, however sensitization can occur after a single
exposure.
▪ Once sensitized, any exposure, even to levels below the
occupational exposure limit can produce a life-threatening asthma
attack.
▪ Exposure must be kept As Low As Reasonably Achievable
(ALARA).
