I am 63 years old and have been self employed since I was 27 when I was forced to leave a relatively senior
management role in the National Coal Board due to my stance on the ’84 miners strike and very vocal criticism
of the NCB, the Tory Government and of course Thatcher.

My career has involved survey, financial and sales positions in various industries and my recent experience is
designing and installing large scale solar pv systems. This included The Pyramid Solar Project.

After a couple of difficult years financially in commercial solar and under pressure from my daughter and son,
Kaleigh and Josh, I decided to take a break in August 2019. To keep busy I started writing my autobiography
which had been in my head for years and part of my “retirement” plan was to rent a villa in Spain over the
winter months. To fund my trips to Spain I started work as a chauffeur and Aug 2019 – Dec 2019 were simply
the most enjoyable months I had for years. I made a few trips to Spain to view villas and in January 2020
decided to set up my own chauffeur business “Spirit of Scotland Tours”. I ordered a Mercedes from a dealer in
Manchester and was due to collect before I went another trip to Spain.

In Dec 2019 the outbreak of a virus in Wuhan, China had started to make the news and by mid January 2020 it
was clear that this virus may spread to Europe and the UK. I started to question whether the virus could start
affecting incoming flights to the UK. I called the dealer in Manchester and explained I would pick up the Merc
when I returned from Spain. By the time I came back I decided to delay collecting the car for another few
weeks. By March the UK was in full lockdown including wiping out the majority of flights and the tourism
business. I had come within a whisper of having a villa in Spain, a new Merc at the front door and in full UK
lockdown. Luck Bastard.
