                                               PROTECTING AND STORING ROPE

                                       Common Whipping
You can use the following whipping technique to bind a rope’s end.

1 Lay a crossing turn along the end of a rope and start making
                          wraps, working inward.

2 Continue making wraps, and tuck the last wrap through the bight.
Make sure the wraps are tightly side by side.

3 Tighten by pulling both ends, so that the crossing stays in the
                          middle of the wraps.

The length of the whipping should be at least as long as the diam-
eter of the rope. If you are tying the whipping over three-strand rope,
the direction of the wrapping should be opposite to the direction of
the strands. The ends can be trimmed close or knotted together with a
                       Reef Knot.

                                                                                    233
