Artis Icono Biplane – An integrated cath lab imaging system
Minimally invasive treatment and surgical options are becoming the new normal in vascular surgery. Artis icono
biplane is an angiography system with detectors installed and optimized to fit into a cath lab. It has various new
1,3
features beneficial for diagnosing and treating a spectrum of heart conditions like structural heart disease, cardiac
arrhythmia, and coronary heart disease. It can give an accurate imaging detail at a low radiation dose irrespective of
a patient’s BMI. 1,2
According to a press release, the Artis icono biplane’s intended purpose is to simplify the clinical workflow and offer
an interventional treatment option for complex cardiovascular diseases. Its c-arm can be positioned at various
3
angles to display images at steep angulations. This along with its ability to acquire images simultaneously at different
angles saves time for the surgeons and makes the imaging process simple. It also provides an X-ray exposure
1
regulation with contrast to noise ratios that allows for high image quality regardless of the angle of the imaging arm.
1,2
The imaging quality is excellent with the added benefit of low radiation exposure for patients and surgeons.

If we talk about diseases, cardiac arrhythmia requires electro mapping of the heart to identify the source of the
arrhythmia. Artis icono biplane will reduce the image articrafts present with the current mapping systems and provide
sound visual cues for proper imaging. Similarly, it has an integrated quantification feature that eliminates the need for
a prelimnary examination with a pressure wire for stent placement in coronary heart disease. For structural heart
disease Artis icono biplane allows the overlay of angiography images with live ultrasound images to create fused
images and effective treatment communication. A newly added feature of this system is the vFFR” (Fractional Flow

Reserve) that provides images with three-dimensional visualization of the affected vessel or area. 1,2
Presently, the system is in the pilot stage at a university hospital in Austria. With its profound benefits, this innovation
will be of help for vascular surgeons worldwide. 2,3
