Horizon 2017

Day 15 - Calypso
Waves lapping from each direction. There was no way out,
To her perception.
Each escape attempt faced a bout, Of storms raging in from the sea.
Preventing her from being free. From her paradise and her prison. She endured terrible monotony, With not even a ransom,
For her forsaken soul.
Her only form of control,
Came from the shipwrecked men, But even their presence took its toll, One by one, they left again.
Until she was alone.
Day 16 - The Trail
Cracked pavement underfoot Worn from soles of a myriad, And toes, stained with soot, From memories they once had.
People looking for answers
To questions they never asked. Remembering life’s cancers, Events lost in the past.
Do they dare look back,
And face the shuffling horde,
Or do they lead the wandering pack, Along the trail, forward.
The path ahead is pristine,
Behind, is soaked with sludge,
And still, these feet do taint the clean, Since the path will never budge.
And as they walk, their dust and dirt Fill the shattered holes,
Repairing the trail, for what it’s worth, Repairing their fragmented souls.
Day 17 - Beach Body
A mismatched blueprint upon the fabric Multi-striped textile
And geometric patterns.
Diamonds and cubes and zags, oh my.
First yellow, then purple, then black white blue pink, Back to purple, then blue again.
Triangle, triangle, line, indiscernible design,
And black fishnet lining the top.
An accent or a focal point?
My uncultured eyes could not tell the difference.
But in the light of the smoldering sun,
Or the cool chlorine of the watery pool, The mesh would not matter
For anything other than odd tan lines.
All I know is that when I asked my mother, She said there was a lot of skin showing.
I agreed and explained:
It was an incentive to work out this summer. Since we bought the swimsuit in question,
I have not laid my eyes on a gym.
Day 18 - Familiars 1 & 2
Familiars 1
My human is very nice, she always has been.
From the moment I first saw her I knew we would be friends forever.
A babbling baby in the crib, capable of nothing but love.
I love her.
And she seemed to care for me too.
Reaching out with those tiny paws, mewling for attention.
Whenever I tried to approach her, the larger ones raised their big booming voices at me, Causing me to scurry out of their dwelling like a terrified mouse.
I was no mouse.
I still visited her in the twilight
Because I am her protector.
Familiars 2
When the crawling creatures came for her in the night,
I was there, clawing through the hordes of daemons and beasts,
Shielding her from the fantasies of the dark.
When she first wobbled around on those two legs,
I was there, leaning against her side, providing support.
No longer did her parents fear me,
For my bravery in the dimmest hours had earned me a place in their hearts as well. They let me warm her, sleeping in that precious crib with my darling human. Months well spent, growing closer, so I could be there for her.
When the evil first started to emerge in her chest,
I sat on it and contained the malevolence, for I knew what harm it could do. Because I am her protector...
Well, I was.
Day 19 - Familiars 3 & 4
Familiars 3
My human’s power only grew, or rather the power within my human did, For it was not hers to control.
The smile of sunshine on her peachy lips,
And smell of death on her fingertips,
They only became brighter, stronger, more potent.
With every day she held me, I felt her hands pulsate with pure energy, Dying to be let out.
But my purring, soothing, and singing
Could only keep her calm and collected for so long.
The darkness culminated that fateful day in the park,
When a sickly smelling man approached her.
I was her protector, but I could not protect her that day.
