Structure of the Student’s coursebook
For each literary text, six of the seven Key components appear in the Student’s coursebook,
presented as follows:
Pre-Reading Activity
A variety of discussion questions and activities triggers the students’ interest and motivates involvement
in the literary text they are about to study. relevant author information is also sometimes offered
as a pre-reading context.
Literary Text
Poems and short stories are presented with line numbering for ease of reference. Short stories are
divided into parts to facilitate study. immediately below each page of text, low frequency words and
expressions are explained in footnotes.
For each poem, the text and the Basic understanding component are presented as a double
page spread – students are able to view and work with the text, glossed low-frequency words,
Key Vocabulary, Vocabulary Practice exercises and LotS questions all at once to complete their
introductory study.
it is strongly recommended that poems are read aloud as part of their study. Listening and viewing
also greatly facilitates understanding of the short stories and play or novel. A list of websites active
at time of printing follows, giving students access to audio recordings or videos of the literary texts
in this option. A search of the internet is sure to yield other sources at any time.
