Hebrews 5:9 "And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal
salvation unto all them that obey him;"
Works-salvationists seize upon the word "obey," knowing we would expect
such verses to say "believe." The solution is simple when you remember
that Jesus commanded us to believe in Him. You obey His command to
believe.
John 12:36-37 "While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be
the children of light...
But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed
not on him:"
John 14:1,11 "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe
also in me... Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me:
or else believe me for the very works' sake."
7
According to Paul, the command applies to everyone:
Acts 17:30-31 "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now
commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed
a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man
whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men,
in that he hath raised him from the dead."
[Footnote 7: The fact that believing is an act of obedience contradicts the
calvinists' myth that we have no choice in the matter.]
Obey or believe the gospel?
2 Thessalonians 1:8 "In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know
not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:"
1 Peter 4:17 "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house
of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that
obey not the gospel of God?"
