Hazardous Drugs
Hazardous Drugs are more that chemotherapy drugs!
Hazardous drugs include: Routes of exposure:
organ transplant medications Urine
biotherapy Stool
immunotherapy Emesis
Soiled linens
hormones and
certain antibiotics.
Follow Hazardous Drugs Precautions:
Wear 2 pairs of chemo-safe gloves (PURPLE!).
Wear chemo-safe gown (BLUE!).
Wear mask (if splashing is a concern).
Cover toilet with blue chux pad prior to flushing, then flush & rush!
Protect yourself when carrying a bedpan/urinal to the bathroom by placing
chux pad over the opening.
Throw away all PPE in the red biohazard bin.
Wash your hands with soap and water after removing PPE, not hand
sanitizer!
Follow these precautions for 48 hours after the patient’s last dose of the
hazardous drug.
Spills
Got a spill 5 mL or more? This includes the drug or bodily
fluids
Locate a spill kit and follow directions right on the box
Under 5mL put on PPE and clean up with Sani Cloth.
