Infection Prevention

Clean In, Clean Out is the official hand hygiene program at UNC
             Hand hygiene and cleaning
                      Hand hygiene should be performed:

 before direct patient care (with or without gloves),
                             before inserting a device,
                             before eating or drinking,
                             after direct patient care,
 after contact with equipment in the patient’s environment,
 after contact with blood or other bodily fluids
(use soap and water if hands visibly soiled),
 before moving from a dirty body site to a clean site,
 after using the bathroom (wash with soap and water).

 Clean patient equipment with approved hospital disinfectants like Sani-Cloth or Metriguard

using a minimum one minute contact time (surfaces of equipment must remain wet for at least one
                             minute to kill all organisms).

CAUTI Prevention at UNC Health Care
 There are many ways assistive personnel can help prevent CAUTIs:
 Use the buddy system (2 trained personnel at the bedside) to aseptically insert a foley
                                       catheter
 Perform foley care daily and as needed using a mild soap like Johnson & Johnson
 Secure catheters with a Stat-lock to prevent excess movement
 Don’t let foley bags touch the floor
 Empty foley bags prior to transport

Remember the ABCs of Foley care:
Avoid valleys in the tubing (place bag at the end of the bed or coil the catheter on the bed to
                                 take up extra tubing)

Below the bladder. Keep collection bags
below the bladder at all times

Continuous downward flow of urine to the collection bag
