Scope of Practice
The North Carolina Board of Nursing defines
the scope of practice for the RN and
Unlicensed Assistive Personnel.
Unlicensed assistive personnel is the term used by the Board of Nursing to describe unlicensed health care assistants that
have been trained to provide certain tasks of “patient” care as directed by a licensed health care provider.
RN scope of practice includes:
Assessment
Planning care
Implementing nursing interventions and prescribed treatment plan
Work together (collaborate) with others
Clinical counseling
Teaching patients
Teaching nursing students
Delegation by the RN
“The licensed nurse, registered and practical, may delegate nursing care activities to unlicensed personnel, regardless
of title, that are appropriate to:
The level of knowledge and skill of the unlicensed personnel and
Are within the legal scope of practice as defined by the Board of Nursing for unlicensed personnel.”
ROLES OF UNLICENSED PERSONNEL - North Carolina Board of Nursing
"Nursing care activities" means activities "Patient care activities" means activities
