From The Journal Senior Editor
To ease into the 2020 year, I am happy to announce that the Journal of
Ophthalmic Prosthetics is completed early. The COVID-19 pandemic has
changed our lives as to how we work and interact with others, so we move
forward and adapt to this new normal. While many of our offices were
closed for several weeks during the pandemic, the authors of this Journal
have been very busy writing and completing their articles. I would like
to thank Dr. Giancarlo Garcia, Joe LeGrand, Jr., Craig Pataky,
Steve Sanders, Walter Johnson, and Michael Hughes for contributing
articles for the 2020 issue.
This year, the Journal is dedicated to the senior editors who have
volunteered many hours making it possible and available to our ASO
members. Joe LeGrand, Sr. was the leader and the first editor of Today’s
Ocularist, which is now named the Journal of Ophthalmic Prosthetics.
He would be proud as to how far we have progressed since the early years.
Our valued senior editors from 1972 through present are listed below:
1972 – 1975 Joe LeGrand, Sr., CASO, FASO
1976 – 1978 Clarence W. Cox, Jr., BCO, FASO
1979 – 1980 Joe LeGrand, Sr., CASO, FASO
1980 – 1985 Jack Diner, BCO
1986 – 1991 Walter Johnson, BCO, BADO, FASO
1992 – 1998 Joe LeGrand, Jr., BCO, BADO, FASO
1999 – 2000 David LeGrand, BCO, BADO, FASO
2001 – 2004 James Willis, BCO, BADO, FASO
2005 – 2012 Michael Hughes, BCO, BADO, FASO
2013 – 2014 David LeGrand, BCO, BADO, FASO
2014 – 2016 Steve Sanders, BCO, BADO
2017 – 2018 Walter Johnson, BCO, BADO, FASO
2019 – 2020 Shirley D. Weyland, BOC, BADO, FASO
It is incredible that over the past 48 years there have been only
10 ocularists who have taken on this role. The LeGrand family have been
the leaders and inspiration of the Journal having Joe LeGrand, Sr., editor
for five years, Joe LeGrand, Jr., for seven years and his brother Dave taking
on the role for three years. Both Walter Johnson and Michael Hughes
have been senior editors for eight years. The Canadian ocularists
provided a hand to the American counterpart, having Jim Willis as senior
editor for four years and very much involved with the editorial board for
over 20 years. I have been the senior editor for the last two years after
helping on the Journal board for 10 years. Joe LeGrand, Sr. would be
pleased of how his idea has expanded from a small booklet to a 50-page
professional journal.
