In 1865, the Doctor visited the Jardin des Plantes in Paris & came across a
young elephant calf to whom he became very intrigued & friendly with. Upon
returning to Britannia, Daedalus spoke with London Zoo’s Superintendent in a bid
to get his friend better food and lodgings. The Zoo was annoyed to learn that the
French had managed to get their hands on the first African elephant specimen to
set foot in Europe so much so that he eventually agreed to send the Jardin des
Plantes the following list of animals in return for the calf: “A rhino, a jackal,
two eagles, a pair of dingoes, a possum and a kangaroo”.
On arriving on our green and pleasant land the Doctor was dismayed at the
neglect shown by the French to his friend. Daedalus using knowledge from his rare
visits to his father in Africa brought the beast back to health with a strange
concoction learned from a Kongo Nzamba medicine man. Made of African berries
and herbs combined with a healthy dose of scotch, this magical JuJu had a couple
of fortunate side effects; turning sour food, sweet & also causing his friend to
grow to a colossal size...... So the Legend of ‘JUMBO’ the world’s largest elephant
was born & the elephant’s love of hard liquor.
