The only way to gall and fret effectively is
for yourself to be a good and honest man.

Doctor Joseph Bell writes to me that both the police and he are completely
stumped by their latest mystery in Whitechapel. He informs me that Arthur Doyle

has departed his tutelage in a pique after a drunken heated discussion relating to
séances and Bell’s, not to mention my own belief in their fakery.

I hear from my good friend Arthur who has now moved to Portsmouth. He writes to
ask if I have anything that is a suitable substitute for liquor, as he is committed

to driving safely in his new horseless carriage. He also needs a clear head to write
about his new crime fighting hero called Sherrinford. He hopes that I don’t mind his
referencing a “Doctor” as his new hero’s sidekick.

I write back, telling him that I shall be staying in Devon until further notice for

private reasons. Oh and that ‘Sherrinford’ is a terrible name for a hero.
