I’m going to take advantage of that. Luckily, one parent of each child is a teacher, so we’ll have holidays and
summers off from babysitting and the plan is to travel. We already have dates in October 2023, when we’re
going to Mexico, and in December 2023, we’re taking an 11-day cruise to Jamaica, then to Honduras, Belize,
and Mexico. Then January 2024, we’re going back to Mexico. Summer of 2024, we plan to travel throughout
California visiting all 21 Missions and the high Sierras. I also enjoy spending time repurposing wine barrels into
art and useful gadgets. I’ve done craft shows, as a side business, for the past seven years and intend to
continue doing that.
Aside from the above, I intend to improve my health, walk and exercise a lot, get lots of rest, and enjoy the
sunsets.
Can you recount a memorable or humorous story from your career that stands out to you?
A memorable moment of mine would actually cover a few people. When I got my first position as assistant
supervisor it was at Household Credit Services. I had a manager tell me, “Never forget where you came from.
Always teach those you supervise to do your job, because one day they will.” I’ve always taken pride in my
ability to train staff, especially my lead workers. I’ve had five lead workers in my time with Child Support. Two
retired, two were promoted to supervisor, and one, God willing, will soon be promoted to supervisor.
Additionally, I’ve had three staff members who have been promoted to lead workers. It’s a great feeling to see
those who have grown under your supervision excel and do a great job. It tells me they trusted me to lead them
and they listened to me. It’s their turn now to carry the baton.
DELIA GUTIERREZ
SUPERVISING CHILD SUPPORT OFFICER
RETIRING DECEMBER 30, 2023
What inspired you to pursue your career, and how has it evolved
over the years?
I had experience working in collections and fraud from my previous
employer, Household Credit Service. I knew I could make a
difference by applying my previous work experience to Child Support
and hopefully improve the lives of children in our community.
Can you share some of the most significant professional
accomplishments or milestones from your career that you are particularly proud of?
I was promoted to Supervising Child Support Office after being a Child Support Officer for only five years.
During my time as Supervisor, I sat on many interview panels and helped hire many members of our current
staff.
What are some of the key lessons or insights you've gained from your years of experience that you'd like to
pass on to the next generation or your colleagues?
