Prepositions
A preposition shows how a noun or a pronoun (called the object of the preposition) is related to another word
in the sentence. They show place, time, or direction. There are well over 100 prepositions. Here are a few of the
most frequently used prepositions:
at in* of* on from * 3 of the 10 most frequently
down over to* with upon used English words
• The teacher left the test on the table.
• The students from this university are exceptional.
Prepositions can be difficult. When looking for prepositions, use the process of elimination to locate them; it's
like solving a puzzle. Always find verbs first, then nouns/pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, and then prepositions.
Practice 1F: Prepositions. Type a Pro under the pronoun, a V under verb, a Prep under preposition, and an N
under the noun paying special attention to prepositions.
Pro V Prep N
Example: We live in the world.
1. The cat jumped on the table and knocked over the glass.
2. Tom fell down the hill.
3. The Son of Man is now glorified, and God is glorified in Him.
4. I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me.
5. I gave a new commandment to you.
Interjections
An interjection is a word that is not grammatically related to the other words in a sentence. Sometimes they
show strong feelings.
• Hey! What are you doing? • Oh, I didn't know you were leaving.
Practice 1G: Interjections. Underline the interjections.
1. Ah, sinful nation, you are a people loaded with guilt!
2. O, Lord, I love you.
3. Yeah, it is finally Friday!
4. Wow! I don't believe it!
5. Well, I don't know.
Part of Speech Depends on Function
With some words, you cannot tell what part of speech a word is until you determine its job (function) in a
sentence. The same word may function as different parts of speech, depending on its use.
• I left the book on the chair. (verb)
• Jane took a left turn at the large tree. (adjective; answers the question “what kind?”)
• God will part the Red Sea. (verb)
• She played a big part in the show. (noun)
