Interrogative (Question)
An interrogative sentence asks a question. It ends with a question mark.
• What shall I offer to the Lord?
Exclamatory (Exclamation)
An exclamatory sentence shows sudden or strong emotion. It ends with an exclamation point.
• How beautiful this day is!
Practice 1B: Sentence Types. Identify each of the following sentences as one of the four sentence types:
statement, command, question, exclamation.
Example: statement The law was given to God’s people.
1. Why are you forcing them?
2. Gentiles are not like Jews.
3. He is my beloved one.
4. Throw out the slave woman and her son.
5. You people in Galatia are so foolish!
Parts of speech
The individual words that make up a sentence are usually classified as one of eight parts of speech.
noun pronoun verb adjective
adverb preposition conjunction interjection
To determine what part of speech a word is, one must first determine what the word is doing. What is its job? Is
it naming something? Describing something? Showing action? Joining words?
Verbs
Each sentence must have a verb. A verb shows action or a state of being, links a word to the subject, or helps
another verb.
• shows action God created the heavens and the earth.
• shows state of being (existence) I am under the tree.
• links another word to the subject The fruit was sweet. Christ is alive.
• "helps" another verb* He will help you pass the test.
* tense is partly expressed with helping verbs
Nouns
A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea.
• person doctor, brother, Kelly
• place Zambia, Nebraska, garden, province
• thing pen, car, chair
• idea joy, happiness, courage
Pronouns
A pronoun takes the place of a noun.
• He told me to ask Paul for advice.
• They asked Tammy to teach the class.
• The dog was tangled in its leash.
