Study Section 10: Jesus, the Bread of Life
10.1 Connect
Today we will consider a sentence Jesus said in John 6:36, “ Everyone the Father gives Me will
37
come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out.” For years there has been a lot
of confusion about what Jesus actually meant when he said this. Those who follow John Calvin
take this verse to mean that the Father elects certain people for salvation and others for
damnation. They conclude that the elect are those whom the Father gave to Jesus. Others
theologians believe that that Calvin was too extreme. They do not believe that God elected people to be
eternally damned. They believe that all who come to Jesus in belief are those whom the Father gives to His Son.
II Peter 3:8 says that God is not willing that ANY should perish, but that all should come to repentance. So who
is correct in their view? Today, let’s examine the issues and see if we can come to a balance view of the matter.
10.2 Objectives
1. The student should be able to determine who it was that the Father gives to His Son.
2. The student should be able to explain that Jesus was truthful in telling his brothers that he was
delaying in going to Jerusalem for the Passover.
3. The student should be able to state in what ways the humanity of Jesus Christ relates to the deity of Christ.
10.3 The Bread of Life - John 6:30 – 50
John 6:30 “What sign then are You going to do so we may see and believe You?” they asked.
“What are You going to perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is
31
written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” Jesus said to them, “I assure you: Moses
32
didn’t give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the real bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is the One who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Then they said,
34
“Sir, give us this bread always!” “I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to Me will
35
36
ever be hungry, and no one who believes in Me will ever be thirsty again. But as I told you, you’ve seen Me,
and yet you do not believe. Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I
37
will never cast out.
The Effectual Calling of God
Romans 8:29 – 31 … And those He
predestined, He also called; those He called;
He also justified; those He justified, He also
glorified…” Part of the problem here is that
many Christians fail to distinguish between
the external call of the Gospel and the
internal call of the Holy Spirit. They say that
God calls all men externally, and then when
some men repent and believe, God gives
them new life. It is true that God calls all men,
