Study Section 14: Jesus Comforts His Disciples
14.1 Connect
Do you think there are many ways to God? As Christians, we believe Jesus is the way. But other
religions believe their other gods are the way. Is Christianity an exclusive religion? Are we really
only the ones who got it right?
Today we come to a passage where Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. NO ONE comes
to the Father except through me.” He is not a way, as in one of many; He is the way, as in the one
and only. No one, regardless of reputation, achievement, special knowledge, or personal holiness, can come to
God the Father except through Jesus.
God is the person who defines how He can be found, not man. The Bible declares that truth is found outside of
us. Truth is found in God’s Word (John 17:17) and in Jesus Christ (John 14:6). God declares what is true
regardless if humans agree with it or not. God’s words remain true. Truth is not based on human opinion.
Jesus is not a way, as in one of many; He is the way, as in the one and only. Let’s learn more about this….

1 “Your heart must not be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are
many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you.
3 If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that
where I am you may be also. You know the way where I am going.” “Lord,” Thomas said, “we

don’t know where You’re going. How can we know the way?” Jesus told him, “I am the way,

the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. “If you know Me, you
7
will also know My Father. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him.”
Here again, as we have seen throughout this gospel, Jesus affirmed the oneness between Himself and the
Father. To know Him is to know the Father. In the disciples ‘case, to have seen Jesus in the flash meant they had

seen the Father. Once again, however, one of the disciples replied with perplexity: “Lord,” said Philip, “show
us the Father, and that’s enough for us.” It was if Philip said: “Jesus, we’ve seen some fantastic things – You
change the water into wine, You fed the 5000, You walked on the water. Old Testament people would have
given their lives to see just one of these miracles You have performed. Angels would like to look into these
