Key Term. The author of Hebrews appropriates the Old Testament concept of “rest” to explain the
salvation Christ offers to all of humanity. The Old Testament describes rest as entrance into the
Promised Land. For Israel, the rest of the Promised Land was never fully realized. Jesus’ Promised Land is
realized in eternal relationship with God that begins now. In Christ, we have an enduring spiritual rest
that can grant us the peace we crave now and an eternal future with God Himself. We can also speak
15
directly to God via prayer, right now, because of Jesus’ intercession for us in heaven.
Why You Should Care about Hebrews
Sometimes, we feel like giving up. The Letter to the Hebrews was written to encourage Christians in just
such a time.

DIY. The author of Hebrews is unknown, and its date, location, audience, genre, and literary structure
are all greatly debated among New Testament scholars. Sometimes these critical issues can enhance
17
your understanding of a biblical book; sometimes they can distract. See what you think.
