Study Section 14: Angelology

                14.1 Connect.

People often ask the following questions about Angels: What are Angels? What proof do we
have that validates their existence? Why did God create them? Are there bad or good angels?
Do angels have any Biblical relevance? What does the Bible say about angels? We often hear
stories of angels appearing and disappearing everywhere these days. Many people believe
that these spirit beings not only exist but also appear and minister to them.

There are many unbiblical views of angels today. Some believe angels are human beings who have died.
Others believe that angels are impersonal sources of power. Still others deny the existence of angels
entirely. Along with the rejection of the Bible as the Word of God came the denial of the existence of
angels. A biblical understanding of angelology will correct these false beliefs and will help us know what
God’s expects to know about angel as part of his creation.

In this section of the Study we will seek to understand and develop a biblical view of angels in general.
This includes the clear understanding of who angels are and how they serve God’s purposes.

                14.3 What is Angelology?

Angelology is a theological term that is used to refer to the study of angels. People have
different misguided understandings about Angels. Many religions recognize the existence of the
spiritual world, but do not have a clear Biblical understanding of angels. Previously we saw that
others believe angels are human beings who have died, and others go on to say that angels are
impersonal sources of power. There are others who completely deny the existence of God and
Angels. These false beliefs’ can be corrected by developing a biblical understanding of angelology.
Berkhof said, “Philosophy can neither prove nor disprove the existence of angels, therefore, we turn to
scriptures which shows angels in action”. He continues to say that, “No one who goes to the authority of
the word of can doubt the existence of angels” (Berkhof 1938).

Angelology tells us what the Bible teaches about angels. It is important to know how the angels relate to
humanity and serve God’s purposes. How we understand angelology has an impact on how we should
live our lives regarding God’s protection, providence, and the need to worship Him wholeheartedly. The
               creation of Angels exalts God.
