on the throne of Israel. Most of us know that there wasn’t even an Israel for hundreds of years…but
during that time and for eternity, King David’s descendant, Jesus, remains on the throne.
From that stump of Jesse grew the Branch that is Jesus.
V. 2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon Him. ‘Anointing’ was done with oil in
ancient times. Today, and in Jesus Christ, it was done by the anointing of Holy
Spirit.
V. 2 contains a ‘seven-fold’ Spirit: the Spirit of the Lord, wisdom, understanding,
counsel, might, knowledge, and fear of the Lord. This seven step Spirit represents the perfection of the
anointing of this Branch of Jesse.
V. 3-5 This description of the Messiah also says that He will ‘delight in the fear of the Lord’. Even Jesus
has a reverence for God, His Father.
Not by what He’s heard or by knowledge that He’s acquired by any human sense, Jesus will judge with
righteousness. The poor, the meek, the wicked. Everyone will ultimately be judged by Jesus. Then,
begins a reign of incredible peace.
V. 6-9 All these are natural adversaries: wolves and sheep, essentially any livestock along with lions and

V. 11 Another example of how the prophecy had a contemporary fulfillment and
a later, or maybe many fulfillments. It could refer to the return of the Jews to their homeland after the
exile, the first time being the Exodus. But it also refers to the future return of Jesus, to gather believers
unto Himself. He always preserves the remnant.
V. 12-16 These verses all point to the Second Coming, gathering those who have chosen Him, destroying
those who have not.
Chapter 12 - Main Idea: A short psalm of praise for God’s saving work,
with a call to energetic proclamation of the gospel.
God’s ultimate goal in the salvation of His people…you and me…is to bring
glory to His name.
V. 1-2 ‘In that day’, God’s anger at our sin is turned away, because He has ‘become our salvation’.
