P. 60
This is reserved to NT authors, most of whom were Apostles or those related to an Apostle (Mark,
Luke) . The NT gift of prophecy must be limited. Inspired revelation has ceased (cf. Jude 3 and 20).
Barnabas
Luke has already said a lot about Peter and John, has more to say about Paul’s ministry more
especially in the coming verses, beginning with chapter 13. However, Luke also had a significant
portion to say about Barnabas. Check out the following references and dig what he says about the
life of Barnabas (Acts 4:36-37; Acts 9:27-28; Acts 11:22-26; Acts 13-14 (esp. 13:13; 14:12); Acts 15:36-
41 (sequel: 1 Cor. 9:6; Col 4:10/Phi. 24; 2 Tim 4:11).
Beginning from 11:22-26, we see the teaching ministry of Barnabas. He then goes out to look for
Saul, and brings him from Tarsus (Acts 9:30) to Antioch.
CHRISTIANS
It is here where we see the first use of the name “Christian” (11:26). “Christian” is used only two
other places in the Bible: Acts26:28; 1 Peter 4:16. It was a nickname after seeing how the lives of the
followers of Jesus reflected their master (Christ). Initially, the followers of Jesus were said to be the
members of the way. In this Hellenistic setting, it is possible that the term was given by governmental
officials to differentiate Jews from believers.
Barnabas: Son of Encouragement
