witnesses. But those elders who are sinning, you are to reprove before everyone, so
20
that the others may take warning. I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus
21
and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing
out of favoritism.
22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep
yourself pure.
23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your
frequent illnesses.
24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins
of others trail behind them. In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even
25
those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.
V17. Double honor.
• What does this mean? (Financial support and reverence)
• Double what they got last year?
• Double as to what they pay the pastor down the road?
• Double from what someone who did not do as good a job?
V19-22. Protection, correction and leading leaders.
19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three
Keep
yourself pure.
o We do not accept rumors or accusations from only one person.
o Take your time in choosing leaders.
Create a written policy on how you would deal with a complaint from someone
regarding an elder.
V23-25. Christian liberty and reaping what we sow.
23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your
frequent illnesses.
24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the
sins of others trail behind them. In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and
25
even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.
V23. Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your
frequent illnesses.
This verse should not be used as license to encourage drinking. It is more than likely that, to clarify his
directive for Timothy, to keep himself pure, Paul put in this exception clause.
