5. Significance
But you [apostles] shall receive [acquire] power [ability to perform an
activity]…
(1) This signifies that Jesus is speaking to His followers.
(a) Luke identifies Jesus in verses 1-2 of chapter 1.
(b) Luke identifies the apostles in verse 2 of chapter 1.
(c) It is stated in verse 4 of chapter 1 that Jesus is assembled with His followers and
is speaking to them.
(d) It is also stated in verse 6 of chapter 1 that Jesus’ followers are speaking with
Him.
(e) In verse 6 of chapter 1 Jesus’ followers ask Him a question to which He issues
His reply beginning in verse 7.
(2) This signifies a contrast in focus for Jesus’ followers.
(a) Jesus’ followers question Him concerning the establishment of His kingdom in
verse 6 of chapter 1.
(b) Jesus answers their question in verse 7 and uses the conjunction ‘but’ in verse 8
to indicate a different focus.
