(2) This signifies that being just a hearer is significantly different than being a
                              hearer and a doer.

                              (a) This is the reason for the metaphor, as indicated by the use of the
                                 conjunction for.
                              (b) The comparison is made clear by the use of the conjunction but in the
                                 next phrase.

                       e. But whoso looketh (investigates) into the perfect (truly genuine and moral) law (rule
or standard) of liberty (that which is free or freeing), and continueth (continues in
activity) therein, he being not a forgetful (one who fails to recall) hearer, but a doer of
                          the work,

                          (1) This signifies that a doer will be a hearer of God’s truth.

                              (a) This person is described as one who investigates.
                              (b) The end result of investigation is understanding.

                          (2) This signifies that a doer will act upon his understanding of God’s truth.

                              (a) This person is not quick to forget what was discovered.
                              (b) His activity is tied to his understanding of the Word.

                      f. this man shall be blessed (find joy) in his deed (that which is carried out or done).

                          (1) This signifies that the doer will be happy.

                              (a) The basic meaning of the term blessed is to enjoy favorable
                                 circumstances.
                              (b) When circumstances are favorable a person is more inclined to be joyous.

                          (2) This signifies that the doer will be fulfilled.

                              (a) He experiences blessing because of his activity.
                              (b) This implies that his activity is worthwhile and fulfilling.

                       5. Significance

                          a. Summarization of the Author’s Message

In this passage James is writing to struggling believers who were encountering various
trials and temptations. In the midst of these trials and temptations he urged them to
look to God for the wisdom they would need either to endure suffering or to resist their
desire to sin. While this wisdom could be found in God’s Word, James indicated that it
wouldn’t be enough for them to simply understand God’s truth; they would also need to
live it. Only then would they find joy, even in the midst of their difficulties.

                          b. Organization of the Author’s Main Thoughts
