Scholars debate how to divide Ecclesiastes. Many suggest breaks near where the Teacher returns
210
to his favorite advice to “eat, drink, and find satisfaction” (3:22; 5:18-20; 8:15; and perhaps 11:9). We
end this first major section with the writer’s final observations on the human appetite. We anticipate a
new discussion under the general heading and question, “Who can tell them what will happen under the
sun after they are gone (6:12)?”
Overview of Ecclesiastes
13.4 Let’s Practice….
1. What role does the author take in writing Ecclesiastes?
2. What word does he use to describe all of life?
3. What viewpoint is meant by the phrase “under the sun?”
4. What has God placed in the human heart to frustrate people?
5. What proof do we have “under the sun” of life after death?
