Why is change needed?

The human heart is desperately wicked (Gen. 8:21; Jer. 17:9).
While this applies specifically to the unregenerate, even those who have been born
again still struggle with the residual effects of hearts previously immersed in idolatry.

We are all conformed to the world in one way or another (Rom. 12:2). Note that this
is spoken to believers. Even as regenerate believers, our flesh is still embattled with
the Spirit (Gal. 5:17). We all continue to practice idolatry (1 Cor. 10:7-13; Jam. 4:1-4).

            So, who needs to change?

All unbelievers (Matt. 12:33; John 3:3).

            All believers (Rom. 12:2; 1 Pet. 2:2).

            What change is needed?
                   • A new position (John 1:12-13; Rom. 5:15-17; 8:1).
                   • A new person (John 3:1-6; Gal. 6:15).
                   • A new power (2 Cor. 13:4; 1 Pet. 1:5).
                   • A new perspective (Matt. 6:33; John 3:11-12; Rom. 8:6).
                   • A new passion (Matt. 22:37; 1 Thess. 3:12).

Understanding the goal of biblical counsel

What was God’s original purpose for humanity? Our purpose is found in understanding what it means to be
created in the image of God. God created humanity as His representatives on earth (Gen. 1:26-27). In this
respect, the idea is verbal (i.e., “to image Him forth”). The image of God is primarily communal; together we
image Him forth (Gen. 1:26-27, note the pronouns).

Our purpose is found in understanding the roles given to man and woman. This is particularly important when
providing counsel concerning marriage. The role of man is to take responsibility for the flourishing of his world
(Gen. 2:15). The role of woman is to support and help her husband bring about a flourishing in their world (Gen.
            2:18).

What is the goal of God’s gospel now?
                   • Restoration of relationship between God and man (Jer. 31:31-34; Rom. 8:1ff).
                   • Restoration of the image of God as found in Christ (Rom. 8:29; 2 Cor. 3:18; Col. 3:10).

            What is Christian maturity?
                   • It is NOT knowledge though it involves knowing (John 5:45-46; 1 Cor. 8:1; 2 Tim. 3:5).

                   • It is NOT good behavior though it involves godliness (Luke 18:11-12; Col. 2:20-23).
