or billions of years. An alternative interpretation of the carbon-14 data is that the earth experienced a
global flood catastrophe which laid down most of the rock strata and fossils. . . . Whatever the source of
the carbon-14, its presence in nearly every sample tested worldwide is a strong challenge to an ancient
age. Carbon-14 data is now firmly on the side of the young-earth view of history.
17.4 Let’s Practice…
1. Scientific dating is not a way of measuring, but a way of THINKING. Explain what that
means.
2. What are the three critical assumptions can affect the results during radioisotope dating.
3. If a radioisotope date does not match what the scientists thinks it should be, dates are “readjusted”
to become more accurate based on a pre-assumption. Would you consider this “rock solid” science?
4. Explain how radioisotopes can give us the dates of a fossil or rock?
5. What seems to be the major problem with dating rocks using radioisotopes?
6. Why does the presence of Carbon 14 in diamonds pose a problem to an evolutionist?
17.5 Let’s Personalize this Lesson…
We all trust in things every day. When you climb up a ladder, you trust it will hold you up to
the top. You trust that the food you ate today was not contaminated and safe. You trust that
it will rain to bring in the crops. When you get into a bus to go somewhere, you are trusting
in the bus to get you there and trusting in the driver to guide the bus safely down the road.
We live daily by trusting in multiple things.
If, however, every time you take a bus trip, the bus crashes. So far, in five trips, the bus has crashed five
times. Your level of trust dissipates with each trip, correct? If what you trust in lets you down, you may
want to transfer your trust to something or someone else!
In this lesson we showed you how untrustworthy dating methods are. When rock samples where we
absolutely know the rock is 38 years old is dated by scientists to be 2.8 million years old, something is
very wrong. We only listed a few of the inaccuracies of radiometric dating.
We would rather put our trust in one who has NEVER let us down. God always keeps his word. He is
faithful to the core. Aren’t you glad you can put your trust in God and His WORD knowing that he is
trustworthy?
Make a list of areas in your life where you can trust in the Lord:
