Study Section 10: Using a phone to control PowerPoint or Keynote
10.1 Connect
There are several ways to operate a Keynote or PowerPoint presentation. Most people use a
mouse to click their way through the presentation. The mouse could be connected to their
computer via a wire or wirelessly. Of course, a wireless mouse gives the presenter much
more freedom to move around. There are commercial “clickers” on the market that will
remotely act the same as a wireless mouse, but normally operate at greater distances from
the computer or slide source. But with the increased power and use of smart phones, now
these programs can be operated by them. Using your phone saves having to have another piece of
hardware around, plus you can preview slides on your phone before the audience sees them. So
operating a presentation via your smart phone is a really effective way to display a audio-visual aid
during a sermon or teaching time. Let’s learn how this is done….
10.2 Objectives
1. The student should be able to describe how to operate a presentation via their smart
phone.
2. The student should be able to describe the principles of effective design.
10.3 Using a phone to control Power Point (https://davidpapp.com/2016/03/08/using-your-
iphoneipad-for-powerpoint-presentations-on-the-go/)
If you have presentations created in Keynote on a Mac that you want to control remotely with
your iPhone, you can use the Keynote Remote app. If you want to use a Windows Phone as a
remote control for PowerPoint presentations and Windows Media Center, you can use Virtual
Remote Presenter or Media Control apps.
Using your iPhone/iPad for PowerPoint presentations on the go
I am on the go frequently and am asked to make short (and long) presentations. I have become very
comfortable with Microsoft PowerPoint and built up a repertoire of reusable content that I update. I
know those who have all their devices in the Apple world like to use Keynote which has its own set of
benefits.
STEP 1
If you want to display your presentation on an external
device (such as a monitor, TV, or projector), you need to
purchase a Lightning Digital AV Adapter (AV = Audio
Visual). This adapter plugs into your modern iPhone or iPad
device through the lightning port and provides 2
connections: an HDMI connection which is used to connect
to an external display and a lightning port which can be used to charge your device while in use during
the presentation.
