order that He can be their only Lord and personal Savior. The author of Hebrews actually prays for
believers to be equipped by Jesus Christ.
Christ as the High Priest and Royal Priesthood
In His current work as our great High Priest, Jesus is interceding for us
(Heb. 7:23-26, Rom 8:34). What that means is that Christ, on our
behalf, stands in our stead before the Father. He forgives us when we
sin. He brings our requests before the Father. He acts as our mediator.
He is a priest forever. His priesthood is eternal because He is the
eternal God. His priesthood is permanent because He can save those
who draw near to Him since He always makes intercession for them. Walvoord notes that “long
before dying on the cross,” Jesus Christ “served as a Priest in the sense of interceding for man and

acting as a Mediator… He prayed all night, and specifically, according to Luke 22:32.”
Not only is His intercessory work past and present, He will continue to do it even in the future. He
continues to intercede for those who are drawing near to Him.
