Study Section 15: Other Bible Study Techniques

                15.1 Connect.

A lot of pastors do book studies. They start with verse on of a book and each week work
their way through until they have created a commentary on every verse in the book.
However, sometimes an issue may come up that needs immediate attention, and the book
they are studying has nothing to say about that issue. So at times, it is appropriate to shift to
another Bible study technique: the Topical Study. Today we are going to learn how to do a
topical study step by step and then look at an example of a study. The lesson is a bit longer
because of the example, so you might allow and extra hour for this study.

                15.3 Topical Studies

                        Topical Studies

A topical study will take you through various Scriptures in the
Bible that reference a particular topic. Caution should be used to
ensure that you get the whole view of Scripture on the topic that you selected. Your study should either
limit the topic or be exhaustive to ensure accuracy.

Here is a suggested step by step process you may take to prepare a lesson on a particular topic:

                   1. Select a topic. Normally the topic you select will be a pressing need in your life or the life of
your church. It may deal with an issue with which people are dealing. Whatever the issue, the
Bible probably has something to say about it.

                   2. Rewrite the topic into the form of a question. What aspect specifically about the topic would
you like to know? What would the study of this topic reveal to you? How can this study solve a
problem or answer your question? An example may be, “What activities should a Christian be
                       engaged in on Sunday?”

                   3. Do a search in your concordance for verses that deal with that word or synonyms. Perhaps
you want to study principles about “giving” in the Bible. Think of synonyms of your topic word
