the reign of Hezekiah, and bring the tithes to the designated places in obedience to the
Mosaic Law.
Nehemiah 10:37-38 Moreover, we will bring to the storerooms of the house of our God, to
the priests, the first of our ground meal, of our grain offerings, of the fruit of all our trees and
of our new wine and olive oil. And we will bring a tithe of our crops to the Levites, for it is the
Levites who collect the tithes in all the towns where we work. Israel obeys God and brings
the first fruits to the storehouse and a tithe of their crops to the Levites in obedience to the
Mosaic Law.
Nehemiah 12:44 – At that time men were appointed to be in charge of the storerooms for
the contributions, firstfruits and tithes. From the fields around the towns they were to bring
into the storerooms the portions required by the Law for the priests and the Levites, for
Judah was pleased with the ministering priests and Levites. Officers were appointed to
watch over the tithes in the storehouse.
Nehemiah 13:5-12 and he had provided him with a large room formerly used to store the
grain offerings and incense and temple articles, and also the tithes of grain, new wine and
olive oil prescribed for the Levites, musicians and gatekeepers, as well as the contributions
for the priests. Nehemiah cleanses the storehouse and kicks Tobiah out of the room that
was designated to store the tithe. He then restores order.
Amos 4:4 Go to Bethel and sin; go to Gilgal and sin yet more. Bring your sacrifices every
morning, your tithes every three years. God is not pleased with their sacrifices every three years
and reiterates the curse that is upon them if they don’t.
Malachi 3:8-10 Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing
you?’ “In tithes and offerings. God reprimands Israel for not delivering the Mosaic tithe, and
reiterates the blessings and curse that would be as a result of whatever decision they chose.
This is the most used verse today by pastors who put their church under the law of the tithe.
They equate not giving your 10% to the church to robbing God. They also, in this passage,
inform their congregation that the “storehouse” (which was a building in Jerusalem) is the
church. This passage does not apply to the church or believers today!
Matthew 23:23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a
tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important
matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness, but these are the things you should have
done without neglecting the others.” Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for not obeying the
weightier matters of the law along with tithing. He also rebukes them for tithing mint, dill
and cumin which were not required in the Mosaic Law. The Pharisees made a practice of
adding hundreds of rules and regulations which must be obeyed in order to be considered
righteous. Adding more rules to the tithe made it even more difficult obey the Pharisees
rules.
Luke 11:42 – 42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and
all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have
practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. A parallel bible verse of Matthew
23:23 as Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for not obeying the weightier matters of the law.
