*Exercise of gift: Peter’s insight into the deceitful motives and action of Ananias (Acts 5:3-4).
                   6. Speaking in tongues: Spirit-inspired utterance addressed to God in a language unintelligible to
                       both speaker and hearer, yet under the control of the speaker (1 Cor 12:10, 28; cf. Acts 2:5-11;
                       10:46; 19:6).
*Exercise of gift: Paul’s affirmation and regular practice of tongues in private devotion (1 Cor
14:2, 4, 5, 14-15, 19, 28); the overemphasis on tongues in the assembly in Corinth corrected not
by disuse but by correction of the abuse (1 Cor 14:4-12, 19, 26-33).
                   7. Interpretation of tongues: Spirit-inspired utterance given to the tongues speaker or to another
in the assembly, which makes intelligible what was “spoken in tongues” (1 Cor 12:10, 30).
*Exercise of gift: Corinthian believers are to permit tongues in corporate worship only when
                       there is an interpreter (1 Cor 14:5, 13, 27-28).
                   8. Evangelism: the proclamation of the gospel so that individuals personally encounter and
embrace Christ and his offer of salvation (Eph 4:11).
*Exercise of gift: Philip (Acts 21:8) in Samaria (Acts 8:4-8, 12-13) and with the Ethiopian eunuch
(Acts 8:34-38). Even without the ‘gift’ of evangelism believers are to evangelize (2 Tim 4:5).
                   9. Exhortation: the pastoral application of the Word of God so that one “comforts the afflicted and
                       afflicts the comfortable” (Rom 12:8).
*Exercise of gift: Barnabas, son of encouragement, upon his arrival at the church in Antioch
                       (Acts 11:22-24).
                   10. Faith: the declaration of vision of what God wants done and the sustaining of it in unwavering
confidence against seemingly insurmountable obstacles (1 Cor 12:9).
*Exercise of gift: Paul’s courageous leadership in the storm at sea (Acts 27:21-26).
                   11. Pastoring: the spiritual feeding, guiding, and guarding of a local flock of believers (Eph 4:11).
*Exercise of gift: Ephesian elders’ responsibility (Acts 20:28-32; Timothy in Ephesus and Titus in
Crete (Pastoral letters); elders of the churches in Asia minor (1 Pet 5:2-4).
                   12. Teaching: the spiritually effective explanation, defense, and application of the truth of the Word
of God to the community of faith (1 Cor 12:28; Rom 12:7; Eph 4:11; 1 Pet 4:11a, “speaks”).
*Exercise of gift: overseers (elders) must be able to teach (1 Tim 3:2; 5:17; Tit 1:9).

               B. Gifts of Physical Service
                   13. Serving: diligent and humble acts of sacrifice to step into the gap wherever need exists in the
body of Christ and to fill it (Rom 12:7; 1 Pet 4:11).
*Exercise of gift: the seven who “waited on tables” in the care for widows (Acts 6:2-6).
                   14. Helping (1 Cor 12:28) = contributing to the needs of others (Rom 12:8): spiritual awareness of
and creative ability to meet physical needs in the body of Christ.
*Exercise of gift: Dorcas who made clothes for the poor (Acts 9:36-39); Barnabas who gave the
proceeds of his land for the needs of the church (Acts 4:36-37).
                   15. Showing mercy: the meeting of physical need in such a way that both body and spirit benefit
(Rom 12:8). *Exercise of gift: disciples in Antioch who according to their ability gave for their
suffering brothers in Judea (Acts 11:29-30).
                   16. Gifts of healing: miraculous restoration to health of physical bodies (1 Cor 12:9, 28).
*Exercise of gift: Paul’s healing of Publius’ father of dysentery and of many of the sick on the

                   17. Workings of miracles: all other kinds of supernatural activity beyond the healing of the sick (1
                       Cor 12:10, 28-29).
*Exercise of gift: Paul’s temporary blinding of Elymas the sorcerer of Cyprus (Acts 13:11-12).
                   18. Leadership/Administration: wise governance or administrative acumen provided to the church
as a whole especially at strategic times of decision making.
