The ordinary twist is called right-handed and results in a pattern of fibers
going the same way as the diagonal stroke in a “Z.” In rope making, indi¬
vidual fibers are first twisted thus to form a yarn. Then, two or more yarns
are twisted together, left-handed, to form a strand. These strands are then
twisted in the final, right-handed way to form a rope.
