Geoffrey Budworth tells me that a Thames river boatman belays to a cleat
by means of a round turn, figure-of-eight turns, and a final round turn—
“but no back hitch as the Thames has short, sharp swells and we distrusted
anything that might jerk up too tight to undo in a hurry. . .”
