In making fast to a cleat, you take the line first around the far end which
gives a clean lead and a bit of advantage if there is strain on the rope. To
add to your advantage, take a turn around the cleat before commencing
the slower figure eight turns. If the line fits the cleat snugly, two full figure
eight turns are enough; if in doubt make it three or four. The last hitch lies
more snugly if it follows the lay of the previous turns.
