Metaphysics
Hates to admit
One is not one
Once it has split.
Here is another variation on the same theme. The logical
problems engendered by forcing the coexistence of incompatible
substances have been detailed by philosophers since the time of
Hume. Paradoxes are synonymous with one-sided edges: continuum
is denied by incompatible substances; yet continuum is required for
immanence, for the two to interact (if only in one direction).
Dualistic metaphysicians sometimes like to have their cake and eat it
by the semantic trick of defining their duality as simultaneously
being a unity; that may remove the boundary problems for them,
but not for a reasonable analyst. Theogony is a case in point,
reducing to creatio ex nihilo cosmology: what is cannot come from
what isn’t.
