Into the Mind
Fall guy
Personality’s other parts,
The better to flee the scene,
Leave intellect behind
To lick at self-inflicted wounds.
Within the often adversarial community of cranial functions,
thinking itself can become a victim or scapegoat: awareness of
interior injury is largely thought, not feeling. One can be battered by
chains of association most of whose links remain subconsciously
concealed. This is the circumstance of rationalization, an explanation
of causality limited to events acceptable to the ego. The investigating
intellect knows only itself; therefore it must be guilty. Gluckman
implicitly denigrates self-awareness in this piece—as he does in
others; the irony of that which makes us human being our downfall
is a leitmotif in his work.
