Into the Mind

              Sound
              Sleep
              Snores
              Drape
              Dream
              Doors.

“Sound” refers both to the depth of unconsciousness and the
noise accompanying it. “Drape” describes the uvular flap in terms of
a furnishing fabric, reinforcing the identification of oral and
architectural portals. Thus, though the poem is primarily imagistic, it
also suggests a surreal breathing passage leading down into ever-
darker levels of nocturnal fantasy. Alliteration and rhyme combine
to make a tongue-twister; the mind also stumbles on it, giving
support to the description of thought as sub-vocal speech.
